60 INSIGHT : PMWE 2020 a very large range of torque, power and maximum speed available, thanks to the use of asynchronous machines the vehicle benefits from high-fidelity testing,” he said. “Road load simulation is complete on uphill as well as downhill tracks. You can simulate a complete track or even a race on this dyno. A full simulation solution such as CarMaker or ScanEr will simulate a complete track environment. Driven by a smart electronic board, loads are finely adjusted on each wheel in real time. That not only allows testing the vehicle under road load simulation but also linear acceleration or sweep tests. “Furthermore, a strong software suite allows data from the vehicle to be accessed via OBD and CAN, while it can also measure lambda or any signal. With each wheel pod being driven autonomously, this dyno can even force some speed offset to check differential behaviour.” Lentus Composites was recently a recipient of a UK government- supported Driving the Electric Revolution grant to help vertically integrate its capability to manufacture high-speed rotors and other electric motor components. Its customer base includes the supply of Formula One MGU-H and -K rotors. For many years Lentus Composites has designed and developed advanced composite magnet retention sleeving for high-speed, permanent magnet electrical machines. Mike Dewhirst explained that, aided by the grant, the company has now brought the capability in- house to manufacture an entire high-speed rotor assembly, including either CNC-machining or additively manufacturing the metal core, bonding the magnets to it, grinding the magnets, producing a carbon fibre composite outer sleeve and assembling and balancing the complete unit ready for the customer. In view of the heat to which they are subjected, the rotors often turbocharger with an accordingly optimised compressor inlet system. “This configuration significantly reduces application development time and cost, while offering increased aerodynamic design flexibility,” he said. “The externally mounted e-motor/generator also benefits from significantly improved thermal management of the electrical components in operation, resulting in a very robust and simple vehicle cooling system integration compared to alternative e-turbocharger configurations.” The unit is available in a range of e-motor power levels, from 6 to 90 kW for 48 V mild hybrid or 400/600/800 V complete hybrid system integration. The VDL E-turbocharger can also be supplied in a range of turbocharger sizes and aerodynamic configurations to suit any motorsport or other relevant application. Rotronics has introduced its versatile Hubscan full-car dyno. The company has long experience of producing asynchronous and eddy current chassis dynos and engine test benches, and its latest offering suits vehicles including the likes of rally cars and single- seaters, two- and four-wheel drive and internal combustion engine, hybrid and electric. Jean-Loup Biarneix explained that the Hubscan uses eddy current or asynchronous electrical machines, features direct hub connection and includes accurate wheel force and speed measurement. “With The Van der Lee VDL E-turbocharger system t Rotronics’ new Hubscan dyno
