4 So Honda is set to quit Formula One while maintaining its involvement in IndyCar, Prototype racing and MotoGP. It cites realignment of resources in favour of r&d into ‘carbon- free’ technology for the road. Nevertheless, Red Bull has yet to discount the possibility of taking over its programme, on the basis that by 2022, Formula One power units will be frozen, making that move within its capability. That would make the writing on the wall inscrutable. When turbos brought manufacturers into Grand Prix racing, Renault, BMW, Ford and Honda lined up to challenge Ferrari. Now, with Renault re-clothing its team as Alpine, and Aston Martin rebranding Racing Point as its own, we are witnessing the transformation of Formula One from a method of marketing mainstream cars into a proving ground for high-performance marques. At the same time, the mass manufacturers are jumping on the burgeoning electric motorsport bandwagon. With Formula E continuing its predominance of car maker support, the burning question now is: how long before all- electric can match hybrid racecar performance? Batteries might be about to take a step forward – see Grid in this issue – while ongoing development promises to increase the amount of hydrogen it is feasible to carry on board. Le Mans has already committed to a fuel cell Prototype category. How long before hydrogen can challenge gasoline over the 24 Hours? How long before Formula E gains the capability to rival Formula One pace? How long before the established high- performance marques transition to all-electric propulsion? Maybe that is what the writing on the wall is urging us to consider.
